What Is Field Goal Percentage?
Field goal percentage (FG%) is one of the most common efficiency stats in basketball. It measures how often a player or team converts their field goal attempts into made baskets. A higher FG% means a player is scoring more efficiently with the shots they take. This calculator works for any sport or scenario that uses a made-vs-attempted ratio, including overall shooting percentage.
How to Use This Calculator
Enter the number of field goals made (successful shots) and the number of field goals attempted (total shots taken). The calculator divides made by attempted, multiplies by 100, and shows your shooting accuracy as a percentage. It also displays how many shots were missed.
The Formula Explained
The formula is simple: $$\text{FG\%} = \frac{\text{Field Goals Made}}{\text{Field Goals Attempted}} \times 100$$ Multiplying by 100 converts the raw fraction into a percentage. Note that field goals attempted should always be greater than or equal to field goals made — you cannot make more shots than you take.
Worked Example
Suppose a player makes 8 of 15 shots. The calculation is $$8 \div 15 = 0.5333, \quad 0.5333 \times 100 = 53.33\%$$ So the player has a field goal percentage of about 53.3%, with 7 shots missed.
FAQ
What is a good FG%? In the NBA, a field goal percentage above 50% is considered excellent for most players, though it varies by position.
Does FG% include free throws? No. Field goal percentage counts only shots from the field (two- and three-pointers), not free throws.
Can FG% be over 100%? No. Since you can't make more shots than you attempt, FG% maxes out at 100%.
