What Is the Square Footage Cost Calculator?

The Square Footage Cost Calculator helps you estimate the total cost of a project that is priced by area. Whether you are buying flooring, tile, carpet, paint, concrete, or sod, materials and labor are frequently quoted as a price per square foot. This tool multiplies the area of your space by that unit price so you instantly know the full project cost.

How to Use It

Enter the length and width of your space in feet, then enter the price per square foot in dollars. The calculator computes the area (length \(\times\) width) and multiplies it by the unit price to return the total cost. If you already know your area, simply set width to 1 and enter the area as the length.

The Formula Explained

The calculation uses two simple steps. First it finds the area: \(\text{Area} = \text{Length} \times \text{Width}\). Then it applies the unit price: \(\text{Total Cost} = \text{Area} \times \text{Price per Square Foot}\). Because cost scales directly with area, doubling either dimension roughly doubles the price — and increasing both can quadruple it.

$$\text{Total Cost} = \text{Length (ft)} \times \text{Width (ft)} \times \text{Price/ft}^2$$

Worked Example

Suppose you are tiling a room that is 20 ft long and 15 ft wide, and the tile costs $5 per square foot. The area is \(20 \times 15 = 300\) square feet. The total cost is \(300 \times \$5 = \) $1,500. Add a 10% waste allowance and you'd budget for roughly 330 sq ft, or about $1,650.

FAQ

Should I add extra for waste? Yes. For tile and flooring, add 5–15% for cuts, breakage, and pattern matching.

Can I use it for non-rectangular rooms? Split the room into rectangles, calculate each, and add the areas together before applying the price.

Does this include labor? Only if your price per square foot already includes labor. Otherwise run the calculator twice — once for materials and once for installation.
