What Is the Rectangular Room Square Footage Calculator?

This tool calculates the floor area of any rectangular (or square) room. By entering the room's length and width in feet, you instantly get the total square footage — the number you need for buying flooring, paint, tile, carpet, or estimating heating and cooling capacity. Results are also shown in square yards and square meters for convenience.

How to Use It

Measure the room's length and width along the floor in feet (use a tape measure wall to wall). Enter both values and the calculator multiplies them to return the area. For irregular rooms, split the space into rectangles, calculate each separately, and add the results together.

The Formula Explained

The area of a rectangle is simply length times width: $$A = L \times W$$ Both measurements must be in the same unit. If your dimensions are in feet, the answer is in square feet. To convert, divide square feet by 9 for square yards, or multiply by 0.092903 for square meters.

Room area equals length multiplied by width.

Worked Example

Suppose a living room is 15 feet long and 12 feet wide. The area is $$15 \times 12 = 180 \text{ square feet}.$$ That equals \(180 \div 9 = 20\) square yards, or about 16.72 square meters. If carpet costs $4 per square foot, the room would need roughly $720 of carpet before waste.

A 12 ft by 10 ft room contains 120 one-foot squares, or 120 sq ft.

FAQ

Do I need to add extra for waste? Yes — for flooring and tile, add 5–10% to the calculated area to cover cuts, mistakes, and pattern matching.

What if my room isn't a perfect rectangle? Break it into rectangular sections, compute each area, then sum them.

Can I use meters instead? The labels assume feet, but the math works for any unit — just remember the result will be in that unit squared.
