What Is This Calculator?

This calculator answers the everyday question: "What percent of X is Y?" In other words, it tells you what fraction one number (Y, the part) represents of another number (X, the whole), expressed as a percentage. It is useful for test scores, discounts, budgets, statistics, and any situation where you need to compare a part to a total.

How to Use It

Enter the part value as Y and the whole value as X, then read the result. For example, if you scored 45 points out of 60, set Y = 45 and X = 60 to find your percentage. The whole (X) cannot be zero, since dividing by zero is undefined.

The Formula Explained

The math is simple: divide the part by the whole, then multiply by 100 to convert the ratio into a percentage.

$$\text{percent} = \frac{Y}{X} \times 100$$

The division gives a decimal fraction (e.g. 0.25), and multiplying by 100 turns it into a familiar percentage (25%).

Worked Example

Suppose you want to know what percent 25 is of 200. Plug the numbers in: $$\text{percent} = \frac{25}{200} \times 100 = 0.125 \times 100 = 12.5\%$$ So 25 is 12.5% of 200.

FAQ

Can Y be larger than X? Yes. If Y is greater than X, the result is simply more than 100%. For example, 150 is 300% of 50.

What if X is zero? The result is undefined because you cannot divide by zero; the calculator returns 0 in that case.

Can I use decimals? Absolutely. Both X and Y accept decimal values, so you can compute percentages from money, measurements, or any fractional amounts.
