What the Dog Pregnancy Calculator Does

This calculator estimates when your dog is likely to give birth (whelp) based on the date she was mated and her breed size. Canine pregnancy is short and fairly predictable, so a single mating date and a breed-size choice are enough to map out the key milestones of her pregnancy — including the expected due date, the earliest day she might safely deliver, and when each trimester ends.

Breed size slightly affects the expected gestation window.

How to Use It

  • Mating Date: Enter the day your dog was bred. If she was mated over several days, use the first mating date for a conservative estimate.
  • Dog Breed: Choose Small Breed, Medium Breed, or Large Breed. Breed size adjusts the gestation length used in the calculation.

The tool then returns the expected due date, the earliest likely labor date, the end of the first and second trimesters, and how many days and weeks remain until the due date from today.

The Formula Explained

Dog gestation averages about 63 days, but the calculator fine-tunes this by breed size:

  • Medium breed: Due date = mating date + 63 days; earliest labor = + 58 days.
  • Small breed: Due date = mating date + 60 days; earliest labor = + 55 days.
  • Large breed: Due date = mating date + 65 days; earliest labor = + 60 days.

The medium-breed estimate uses the standard formula:

$$\text{Due Date} = \text{Mating Date} + 63 \text{ days}$$

Two trimester markers are fixed regardless of breed: the first trimester ends at 21 days and the second trimester ends at 42 days after mating. The countdown (days and weeks until due date) is measured from today's date.

Worked Example

Suppose a medium-breed dog was mated on March 1. The calculator adds 63 days, giving an expected due date of May 3. The earliest likely labor date is 58 days later, on April 28. The first trimester ends on March 22 (\(+21\) days) and the second trimester ends on April 12 (\(+42\) days). If today were April 1, the tool would show roughly 32 days (about 4 weeks) until the due date.

Frequently Asked Questions

How accurate is the whelping date? It's an estimate. The mating date isn't always the exact conception date because sperm can survive several days, so actual delivery can vary by a few days around the calculated due date.

Why does breed size change the result? Smaller breeds tend to deliver slightly earlier and larger breeds slightly later, so the calculator shifts the gestation window accordingly.

What does the early labor date mean? It's the earliest day a healthy litter would typically be expected. Delivery before this date may need veterinary attention.
