What this calculator does
This tool estimates take-home pay in the Republic of Ireland using the 2024 tax year rules. From your gross annual salary it works out three deductions that appear on an Irish payslip: PAYE income tax, the Universal Social Charge (USC) and PRSI (Class A, 4.1%). It is an estimate for employees and does not cover self-assessment, rental income, pension relief or every credit available.
How to use it
Enter your gross annual income, choose the status that matches your standard rate cut-off (single, lone parent, or married with one/two incomes), and enter your total annual tax credits. A single PAYE worker in 2024 typically has around €4,000 in credits (€1,875 personal + €1,875 employee credit, rounded). The result shows your net income plus a breakdown of each deduction and your effective tax rate.
The formula explained
Income tax is charged at 20% on earnings up to the standard rate cut-off point and 40% on anything above it. Your tax credits are then subtracted from that gross tax. USC is banded: 0.5% up to €12,012, 2% to €25,760, 4% to €70,044 and 8% above. PRSI is a flat 4.1% of income. Net income is gross minus the sum of these three.
$$\begin{gathered} \text{Net} = \text{Income} - (\text{Tax} + \text{USC} + \text{PRSI}) \\[1.5em] \text{where}\quad \left\{ \begin{aligned} \text{Tax} &= \max\!\left(0,\; 0.20\,\min(I, C) + 0.40\,\max(0, I - C) - \text{Credits}\right) \\ \text{USC} &= 0.5\%{\cdot}12012 + 2\%{\cdot}13748 + 4\%{\cdot}44284 + 8\%{\cdot}(I - 70044) \\ \text{PRSI} &= 0.041 \cdot \text{Income} \\ I &= \text{Income}, \quad C = \text{Cut-off} = 42000 \end{aligned} \right. \end{gathered}$$
Worked example
A single earner on €45,000 with €4,000 credits and a €42,000 cut-off: tax = \(€42{,}000 \times 20\% = €8{,}400\) + \(€3{,}000 \times 40\% = €1{,}200\) = €9,600, less €4,000 credits = €5,600 PAYE. USC = \(€60.06 + €274.96 + €769.60 + 0 = €1{,}104.62\). PRSI = €1,845. Total deductions €8,549.62, leaving net pay of €36,450.38.
$$\text{Net} = 45000 - (5600 + 1104.62 + 1845) = 36450.38$$
FAQ
Is this official? No — it is an estimate for guidance only. Always check Revenue.ie or your payslip for exact figures.
Which year does it use? 2024 bands, cut-offs and rates.
Does it include pension contributions? No. Pension contributions reduce taxable income and would lower your bill; this calculator uses gross income directly.
