What is the Speech Time Calculator?
The Speech Time Calculator estimates how long it will take to deliver a speech, presentation, or script aloud. Enter the number of words and your speaking pace, and it returns the approximate duration in minutes and seconds. It's a fast way to check whether your content fits a time slot before you step on stage.
How to use it
Type your total word count and choose a speaking speed in words per minute (WPM). A relaxed, audience-friendly pace is about 130 WPM, which is the default. Conversational speech often runs 120–150 WPM, while fast presenters may reach 160 or more. Slow it down for technical, emotional, or non-native audiences.
The formula explained
The calculation is simple division: minutes = word count ÷ words per minute.
$$\text{Minutes} = \dfrac{\text{Word Count}}{\text{Speaking WPM}}$$
The decimal portion of the result is converted into seconds by multiplying by 60. For example, 1.5 minutes becomes 1 minute 30 seconds.
Worked example
Suppose your speech is 1,300 words and you speak at 130 WPM. Then
$$\frac{1300}{130} = 10 \text{ minutes}$$
exactly. If instead it were 1,000 words at 130 WPM, you'd get about \(\frac{1000}{130} \approx 7.69\) minutes — that is 7 minutes and roughly 41 seconds.
FAQ
How many words is a 5-minute speech? At 130 WPM, about 650 words. At 150 WPM, about 750 words.
What WPM should I use? Use 130 for general speeches, 100–120 for slow or formal delivery, and 150–160 for energetic talks.
Is reading time the same as speaking time? No — silent reading is much faster (around 200–250 WPM), so use a lower WPM for spoken delivery.
