What is the Travel Budget Calculator?

The Travel Budget Calculator helps you estimate the full cost of a trip before you book it. Instead of guessing, you enter your main expenses — flights, lodging, food, activities and local transport — and instantly see your total spend, the cost per traveler, and the average cost per day. This makes it easy to compare destinations, split costs fairly among friends, and decide whether a trip fits your budget.

The calculator also splits the total into cost per person and cost per day.

How to use it

Fill in each field with your best estimate. Flights, activities and local transport are entered as trip totals. Hotel is entered per night and multiplied by the number of nights, while food is entered per day and multiplied by your number of days. Finally enter how many travelers are going. The calculator returns the grand total plus handy breakdowns.

The formula explained

The core equation is: $$\text{Total} = \text{Flights} + (\text{Hotel per night} \times \text{Nights}) + (\text{Food per day} \times \text{Days}) + \text{Activities} + \text{Transport}$$. From that total it derives $$\text{Per person} = \text{Total} \div \text{People}$$ and $$\text{Per day} = \text{Total} \div \text{Days}$$. Separating fixed totals from per-night and per-day rates keeps the estimate accurate even for longer trips.

The total trip cost is the sum of flights, hotel, food, activities and transport.

Worked example

Suppose flights cost 400, a hotel is 90 per night for 6 nights, food is 40 per day for 7 days, activities total 200, and local transport is 80, for 2 travelers. Lodging is \(90 \times 6 = 540\) and food is \(40 \times 7 = 280\). $$\text{Total} = 400 + 540 + 280 + 200 + 80 = 1{,}500$$ Per person = \(1{,}500 \div 2 = 750\), and per day = \(1{,}500 \div 7 \approx 214.29\).

Why is nights different from days? Hotels charge per night while daily expenses like food span full days, so a 7-day trip often has 6 hotel nights.
