What Is the Sod Cost Calculator?

The Sod Cost Calculator helps homeowners and landscapers estimate the price of laying new sod (rolled turf grass) on a lawn. By combining the area to be covered, the price of sod per square foot, a waste allowance, and optional labor cost, it returns a realistic total budget for your project.

How to Use It

Enter the length and width of the area in feet. Add the price per square foot of sod from your supplier, a waste percentage (typically 5–10% for cuts and odd shapes), and optionally a labor cost per square foot if you are hiring installers. The calculator multiplies these together for a complete estimate.

The Formula

The total cost combines area, waste factor, material price, and labor price:

$$\text{Total} = (L \times W) \times \left(1 + \tfrac{w}{100}\right) \times (p + l)$$

where \(L\) = length in feet, \(W\) = width in feet, \(w\) = waste percent, \(p\) = sod price per square foot, and \(l\) = labor cost per square foot.

Worked Example

For a lawn 50 ft by 40 ft, 10% waste, sod at $0.40/sq ft, and no labor:

$$A = (50 \times 40) \times (1 + 0.10) = 2000 \times 1.1 = 2200\,\text{sq ft}$$$$\text{Total} = 2200 \times 0.40 = 880.00$$

The estimated total cost is \(880\) dollars.

FAQ

How much waste should I add? Most projects use 5–10%. Irregular or sloped yards may need more.

Does this include delivery? No — add delivery fees separately, or roll them into the price per square foot.

How is sod usually sold? By the square foot, pallet, or roll. Convert your supplier price to a per-square-foot figure for the most accurate estimate.
