What This Calculator Does
The Total Square Footage Calculator adds up the floor area of several rooms at once. Instead of measuring and adding each room by hand, enter the length and width of up to five rooms and instantly see the combined square footage. It's ideal for estimating flooring, carpet, paint, tile, or HVAC needs for a whole home or section of a building.
How to Use It
Measure each room's length and width in feet. Type the dimensions into the matching room rows — leave any unused rooms blank or zero. Rooms with an area of zero are simply ignored. The result shows your total in square feet, plus handy conversions to square yards and square meters.
The Formula Explained
The area of one rectangular room is length \times width. The total is just the sum of all room areas:
$$\text{Total} = (\text{L}_1 \times \text{W}_1) + (\text{L}_2 \times \text{W}_2) + \cdots + (\text{L}_n \times \text{W}_n)$$
To convert, divide square feet by \(9\) for square yards, or multiply by \(0.09290304\) for square meters.
Worked Example
Suppose you have three rooms: 12 ft \times 10 ft = 120 sq ft, 15 ft \times 12 ft = 180 sq ft, and 9 ft \times 8 ft = 72 sq ft. Adding these gives $$120 + 180 + 72 = 372 \text{ square feet}$$ That equals about 41.33 square yards or 34.56 square meters.
FAQ
What if my rooms aren't rectangular? Break an irregular space into rectangular sections, treat each section as a separate "room," and the calculator will total them.
Can I mix units? No — enter all measurements in feet for an accurate total. Convert other units to feet first.
Why does it show square yards and meters? Flooring and materials are often priced or measured in different units, so the conversions save you an extra step.
