What Is the Carbohydrate Intake Calculator?

This calculator estimates how many grams of carbohydrates you should eat each day based on your total daily energy expenditure (TDEE) and the percentage of your calories you want to come from carbs. Carbohydrates are your body's primary energy source, fueling your brain, muscles, and daily activity. Dietary guidelines commonly recommend that 45–65% of total calories come from carbohydrates, though athletes and people on low-carb plans may target very different ranges.

How to Use It

Enter your daily calorie target (TDEE) — the number of calories you burn in a typical day. Then enter the percentage of those calories you want from carbohydrates. The calculator converts that share of calories into grams using the fact that each gram of carbohydrate provides 4 kilocalories.

The Formula Explained

The calculation is simple: first find the calories from carbs by multiplying TDEE by your carb percentage. Then divide by 4 (the calorie density of carbohydrates) to get grams:

$$\text{Carb Grams} = \frac{\text{TDEE (kcal)} \times \dfrac{\text{Carb \%}}{100}}{4}$$

Carb grams equal TDEE times carb percentage, divided by 4 calories per gram.

Worked Example

Suppose your TDEE is 2,000 kcal and you want 50% of calories from carbs. Calories from carbs = \(2{,}000 \times 0.50 = 1{,}000\) kcal. Divide by 4 → 250 grams of carbohydrates per day.

$$\text{Carb Grams} = \frac{2{,}000 \times 0.50}{4} = \frac{1{,}000}{4} = 250 \text{ g}$$

FAQ

How many carbs should I eat per day? Most general guidelines suggest 45–65% of calories from carbs. For a 2,000 kcal diet at 50%, that's about 250 g.

Why divide by 4? Carbohydrates contain approximately 4 kilocalories of energy per gram, so dividing carb calories by 4 converts them to grams.

Does this include fiber? Yes — this estimates total carbohydrate grams, which includes fiber, starches, and sugars. Always aim for plenty of fiber-rich whole-food carbs.
