What Is a Light Year?

A light year is a unit of distance — not time — equal to how far light travels through a vacuum in one Julian year. Since light moves at roughly 299,792,458 metres per second, one light year equals about \(9.4607 \times 10^{15}\) metres (9.4607 trillion kilometres). Astronomers use it to express the enormous distances between stars and galaxies in manageable numbers.

A light-year is the distance light travels in one year at speed c.

How to Use This Calculator

Enter a numeric value, choose the unit you are converting from, and the unit you want the answer in. The tool supports light years, light days, light hours, light seconds, kilometers, miles, astronomical units (AU) and parsecs. It instantly returns the converted distance along with the equivalent in meters.

The Formula Explained

Every distance is first converted to a common base — meters — using each unit's meter equivalent. The result is the original value multiplied by the source factor, divided by the target factor:

$$\text{Result} = \text{Value} \times \frac{m_{\text{From}}}{m_{\text{To}}}$$

This guarantees accuracy across any unit pair. Light-time units (light second/hour/day) are derived directly from the light-year by dividing by the appropriate number of seconds.

Worked Example

How far is 1 light year in kilometers? One light year is \(9.4607 \times 10^{15}\) m. Dividing by 1,000 m per kilometer gives

$$\frac{9.4607 \times 10^{15}\ \text{m}}{1{,}000\ \text{m/km}} = 9.4607 \times 10^{12}\ \text{km}$$

— about 9.46 trillion kilometers. As another check, Proxima Centauri is roughly 4.24 light years away, which equals about \(4.01 \times 10^{13}\) km.

FAQ

Is a light year a measure of time? No. Despite the word "year," it measures distance.

How many AU are in a light year? About 63,241 astronomical units.

What is a parsec compared to a light year? One parsec equals roughly 3.26 light years.
