What Is the Pounds per Minute Calculator?
The Pounds per Minute Calculator finds the mass flow rate — how many pounds of material pass a point each minute. It is widely used in manufacturing, fluid handling, conveyor systems, food processing, and engineering whenever you need to know how fast mass is moving through a process.
How to Use It
Enter the total mass in pounds and the total time in minutes over which that mass moved or was processed. The calculator divides mass by time and returns the flow rate in pounds per minute (lb/min).
The Formula Explained
The mass flow rate is given by:
$$\dot{m} = m \div t$$
where \(\dot{m}\) is the flow rate (lb/min), \(m\) is the mass in pounds, and \(t\) is the elapsed time in minutes. The relationship is linear: doubling the time for the same mass halves the rate, while doubling the mass over the same time doubles the rate.
Worked Example
Suppose a hopper dispenses 100 pounds of grain over 5 minutes. Then $$\dot{m} = 100 \div 5 = 20 \text{ lb/min}.$$ To convert to pounds per hour, multiply by 60: \(20 \times 60 = 1{,}200\) lb/hr.
FAQ
Can I use any unit of mass? This tool assumes pounds. If your mass is in kilograms, convert first (1 kg ≈ 2.20462 lb).
What if my time is in seconds or hours? Convert to minutes first — divide seconds by 60, or multiply hours by 60.
What does a higher number mean? A higher lb/min value means mass is moving through the system faster.
