What is the Rectangular Field/Plot Area Calculator?

This tool computes the area of any rectangular field, plot, garden, or parcel of land using the simple geometric rule that area equals length times width. Enter the two side measurements, pick your unit, and instantly see the area expressed in your chosen unit as well as in square meters, hectares, and acres — the units most commonly used for land.

How to use it

Measure the two adjacent sides of your rectangular plot. Type the length and width into the fields, choose whether your measurements are in meters, feet, or yards, and the calculator returns the area plus the perimeter (the total distance around the boundary). The conversions to hectares and acres help when comparing with real-estate or agricultural figures.

The formula explained

The area of a rectangle is \( A = L \times W \), where L is the length and W is the width. Because the sides meet at right angles, this product gives the exact enclosed surface. The perimeter is \( P = 2(L + W) \). To convert: 1 hectare = 10,000 m² and 1 acre = 4,046.8564224 m². One foot equals 0.3048 m (so 1 ft² = 0.09290304 m²) and one yard equals 0.9144 m (so 1 yd² = 0.83612736 m²).

Worked example

A plot measures 50 meters by 30 meters. $$ \text{Area} = 50 \times 30 = 1{,}500 \text{ m}^2 $$ That is 1,500 ÷ 10,000 = 0.15 hectares, or 1,500 ÷ 4,046.8564224 ≈ 0.3707 acres. The perimeter is $$ 2 \times (50 + 30) = 160 \text{ m} $$ of fencing.

FAQ

Does it work for squares? Yes — a square is a rectangle with equal sides, so enter the same value for length and width.

What if my plot isn't a perfect rectangle? This calculator assumes four right angles. For irregular shapes, split the land into rectangles and triangles and add the areas together.

Which unit should I pick? Choose the unit you measured in. The result is always shown in that unit plus the standard land-area conversions.
