What is the 2-Mile Run Pace Calculator?

This tool is designed for the U.S. Army Combat Fitness Test (ACFT), where the final event is a timed 2-mile run. It converts your total run time into a per-mile pace so you can gauge how fast you are running each mile and plan your race strategy. While built around the ACFT, the underlying math applies to any 2-mile timed run.

How to use it

Enter your total run time in minutes and seconds. The calculator adds them into total seconds, divides by the 2-mile distance, and displays your average pace in minutes and seconds per mile. Use it to check whether your training runs are hitting the pace you need on test day.

The formula explained

The core calculation is simple division. First we convert your time to seconds: total seconds = minutes × 60 + seconds. Then we divide by 2 to get the average pace per mile:

$$\text{Pace per Mile} = \frac{60 \times \text{Minutes} + \text{Seconds}}{2}\ \text{sec/mile}$$

To work backward from a target pace, multiply the pace per mile by 2 to get the required finish time.

Per-mile pace is the total run time divided evenly across the two miles.

Worked example

Suppose you run the 2 miles in 16 minutes and 30 seconds. That is \(16 \times 60 + 30 = 990\) seconds total. Dividing by 2 gives

$$\frac{990}{2} = 495\ \text{sec/mile}$$

which is 8 minutes and 15 seconds per mile (8:15/mi).

FAQ

Does this assume even pacing? Yes — it reports your average pace. Your actual mile splits may vary.

Is this only for the ACFT? No. Any 2-mile timed run works, but the defaults and context target the ACFT.

How do I find the finish time for a goal pace? Multiply your goal pace per mile (in seconds) by 2. A goal of 8:00/mi (480 sec) means a 16:00 finish.
