What Is the TV Viewing Distance Calculator?

This tool estimates the ideal distance to sit from your television for a comfortable, immersive picture. The right distance depends on two things: your TV's screen size (measured diagonally in inches) and its resolution. Higher-resolution sets like 4K pack more pixels into the same screen, so you can sit closer without seeing individual pixels — which means a more immersive view from a shorter distance.

How to Use It

Enter your TV's diagonal screen size in inches and select the resolution (1080p Full HD or 4K Ultra HD). The calculator returns the recommended seating distance in inches, feet, and centimeters. Use it as a starting guideline when arranging furniture or choosing a TV size for a room.

The Formula Explained

The calculation multiplies the diagonal screen size by a resolution factor. For 1080p, the factor is 1.6, reflecting that lower pixel density requires more distance to avoid a soft or pixelated image. For 4K, the factor is 1.0 — the denser pixel grid lets you sit roughly one screen-diagonal away for a cinematic field of view.

Formula: $$\text{Distance (inches)} = \text{Diagonal} \times \text{factor}$$, where factor = 1.6 for 1080p and 1.0 for 4K. Inches are then converted to feet (\(\div 12\)) and centimeters (\(\times 2.54\)).

A 4K screen can be viewed closer than a 1080p screen of the same size.

Worked Example

For a 55-inch 1080p TV: $$55 \times 1.6 = 88 \text{ inches},$$ which is about 7.33 feet or 223.5 cm. For the same 55-inch screen in 4K: $$55 \times 1.0 = 55 \text{ inches},$$ about 4.58 feet or 139.7 cm — noticeably closer.

FAQ

Is closer always better with 4K? Sitting closer increases immersion, but personal comfort matters. Treat the result as a recommended minimum-to-ideal guideline.

What about 8K TVs? 8K sets allow even closer viewing; this tool covers the most common 1080p and 4K cases.

Does room lighting matter? The distance formula is about pixel visibility and field of view, not lighting, though good lighting always improves the experience.
