What This Calculator Does
The Laminate Flooring Cost Calculator estimates how much it will cost to install laminate flooring in a room. It combines your room dimensions, the price per square foot of the flooring, a waste allowance for cutting, and an optional labor rate to give you a complete budget figure. It works for any currency and any region — just enter the price using your local unit cost.
How to Use It
Enter the room length and width in feet, the price per square foot of your chosen laminate, and a waste allowance (typically 5–10%, more for diagonal or herringbone layouts). If a contractor charges per square foot for installation, add that as the labor rate. The calculator returns the raw area, the area you should actually buy, and a cost breakdown.
The Formula Explained
First the floor area is the room length times width, \(A = L \times W\). Because some planks are cut and discarded, you buy extra material, so the purchase area is
$$A_w = (L \times W)\times\left(1 + \frac{w}{100}\right)$$where \(w\) = waste percentage. The total cost adds material and labor:
$$C = A_w \times p + (L \times W)\times l$$with \(p\) = price per ft² and \(l\) = labor per ft².
Worked Example
A room 12 ft by 10 ft with laminate at $2.50/ft², a 10% waste allowance and no labor:
$$A = 12 \times 10 = 120\,\text{ft}^2$$$$A_w = 120 \times 1.10 = 132\,\text{ft}^2$$$$C = 132 \times 2.50 = \$330$$FAQ
How much waste should I add? Use about 5% for straight rectangular rooms, 10% for rooms with many corners, and up to 15% for diagonal or herringbone patterns.
Does the labor cost include underlayment? No. This estimate covers laminate material and per-square-foot labor only. Add underlayment, trim, and delivery separately.
Can I use metric units? Yes — enter length and width in meters and price per square meter, and the result will be in square meters and your currency.
