What This Calculator Does
This tool converts the dimensions of a rectangular area measured in feet into its total area in square yards. It is handy for buying carpet, sod, concrete, fabric, or flooring, where materials are often priced per square yard but rooms and lots are measured in feet.
How to Use It
Measure the length and width of your rectangle in feet. Enter both values into the calculator. The result shows the area in square yards, along with the area in square feet for reference. Decimal feet are fine — for example, 10.5 feet.
The Formula Explained
The area of a rectangle is length times width. Because one square yard equals a square three feet on each side, it contains \(3 \times 3 = 9\) square feet. To convert square feet to square yards you divide by 9:
$$\text{Square Yards} = \frac{\text{Length (ft)} \times \text{Width (ft)}}{9}$$
Worked Example
Suppose a room is 12 feet long and 9 feet wide. The area in square feet is \(12 \times 9 = 108\) square feet. Dividing by 9 gives $$108 \div 9 = 12 \text{ square yards}.$$ So you would order 12 square yards of carpet (plus a little extra for waste and seams).
FAQ
Why divide by 9 instead of 3? Because we are converting area, not length. A yard is 3 feet, so a square yard is \(3 \times 3 = 9\) square feet.
Can I use this for non-rectangular rooms? Break the space into rectangles, calculate each, and add the results together.
Should I add waste allowance? Yes. For carpet and flooring, adding roughly 5–10% extra is common to cover cuts, seams, and pattern matching.
