What this calculator does
The Essential Oil Dilution Calculator tells you exactly how many drops of essential oil to add to a given amount of carrier oil to reach a target dilution percentage. Diluting essential oils before applying them to the skin is essential for safety — undiluted oils can cause irritation, sensitisation, or burns. This tool removes the guesswork so you can blend confidently every time.
How to use it
Enter the amount of carrier oil you are using in millilitres (common carriers include jojoba, sweet almond, coconut, and grapeseed oil). Then enter your desired dilution percentage. A typical guide: 1% for daily use on sensitive skin, children, or the face; 2–3% for general adult body use; and up to 5% for short-term, targeted relief. Press calculate to see the number of drops to add.
The formula explained
The calculation assumes the standard apothecary estimate of 20 drops per millilitre of essential oil. The number of drops equals the carrier volume multiplied by 20 (drops per ml) multiplied by the dilution percentage, all divided by 100:
$$\text{Drops} = \frac{\text{Carrier (ml)} \times 20 \times \text{Dilution (\%)}}{100}$$
The corresponding essential-oil volume is simply \(\text{drops} \div 20\) millilitres.
Worked example
Suppose you have 30 ml of carrier oil and want a 2% dilution. $$\text{Drops} = \frac{30 \times 20 \times 2}{100} = \frac{1200}{100} = 12 \text{ drops}$$ That is 0.6 ml of essential oil in 30 ml of carrier — a safe everyday blend.
FAQ
Is 20 drops per ml exact? No — drop size varies with oil viscosity, dropper size, and temperature, so it is an industry-standard estimate. For precision, weigh your oils.
What dilution is safe? 1–2% is recommended for most adult daily use, 0.5–1% for children and sensitive skin. Always patch test.
Can I use this for a roller bottle? Yes — enter the bottle's carrier capacity (e.g. 10 ml) and your chosen dilution.
