What is the Pace to Speed Converter?

This tool converts a running or walking pace expressed in minutes and seconds per kilometre into a speed measured in kilometres per hour (km/h) and miles per hour (mph). Pace is how most runners think about effort, but treadmills, GPS watches and race calculators often display speed. This converter bridges the two instantly.

How to use it

Enter the minutes and seconds it takes you to cover one kilometre. For example, a pace of 5 minutes and 30 seconds per kilometre. The calculator combines them into a decimal pace and returns your equivalent speed in km/h and mph.

The formula explained

Because there are 60 minutes in an hour, dividing 60 by your pace in minutes per kilometre gives the number of kilometres you cover in one hour — your speed. Seconds are first converted to a fraction of a minute (seconds ÷ 60) and added to the minutes before the division.

$$\text{Speed (km/h)} = \frac{60}{\text{Pace min} + \dfrac{\text{Pace sec}}{60}}$$ To get mph, divide the km/h value by \(1.609344\).

Pace and speed are inverse: speed equals 60 divided by your pace.

Worked example

Suppose you run at 5:00 per kilometre. The pace in decimal minutes is 5.0. $$\text{Speed} = \frac{60}{5} = 12 \text{ km/h}$$ In mph that is \(12 \div 1.609344 \approx 7.46\) mph. A faster 4:00/km pace gives \(\frac{60}{4} = 15\) km/h.

FAQ

Why does a smaller pace mean a higher speed? Pace and speed are inversely related — the fewer minutes per kilometre, the faster you are moving, so the speed value rises.

What pace is a good running speed? Recreational runners often sit around 6:00–7:00/km (8.6–10 km/h), while competitive runners may hold 4:00/km (15 km/h) or faster.

Can I use this for walking? Yes. Walking paces (often 10:00–12:00/km, or 5–6 km/h) convert the same way.
