What is the Salary to Monthly Take-Home Calculator (UK)?
This calculator estimates your monthly take-home pay in the United Kingdom (England, Wales & Northern Ireland) for the 2024/25 tax year. It deducts Income Tax, Class 1 National Insurance, and any pension contribution from your gross annual salary, then divides the result by 12. Scottish income tax bands differ and are not modelled here.
How to use it
Enter your annual gross salary and, optionally, the percentage of salary you contribute to a pension. The tool shows your monthly net pay along with annual figures for tax, National Insurance, and pension.
The formula explained
$$\text{Net} = \text{Gross} - \text{Income Tax} - \text{National Insurance} - \text{Pension}$$
Income Tax uses a \(\pounds 12{,}570\) personal allowance (reduced by \(\pounds 1\) for every \(\pounds 2\) of income over \(\pounds 100{,}000\)), then 20% up to \(\pounds 50{,}270\), 40% up to \(\pounds 125{,}140\), and 45% above. Class 1 National Insurance is 8% on earnings between \(\pounds 12{,}570\) and \(\pounds 50{,}270\) and 2% on earnings above \(\pounds 50{,}270\).
Worked example
On a \(\pounds 60{,}000\) salary with no pension: $$\text{NI} = (\pounds 50{,}270 - \pounds 12{,}570) \times 8\% + (\pounds 60{,}000 - \pounds 50{,}270) \times 2\% = \pounds 37{,}700 \times 0.08 + \pounds 9{,}730 \times 0.02 = \pounds 3{,}016 + \pounds 194.60 = \pounds 3{,}210.60$$ $$\text{Income tax} = \pounds 37{,}700 \times 20\% + \pounds 9{,}730 \times 40\% = \pounds 7{,}540 + \pounds 3{,}892 = \pounds 11{,}432$$ $$\text{Net annual} = \pounds 60{,}000 - \pounds 11{,}432 - \pounds 3{,}210.60 = \pounds 45{,}357.40$$ about \(\pounds 3{,}779.78\) per month.
