What is the Equilateral Triangle Perimeter Calculator?

An equilateral triangle is a triangle in which all three sides have the same length and all three interior angles equal 60°. Because every side is identical, the perimeter — the total distance around the shape — is simply the side length multiplied by three. This calculator computes that perimeter instantly from a single measurement.

How to use it

Enter the length of one side of the equilateral triangle (in any unit — cm, m, inches, feet) into the input box and the calculator returns the perimeter in the same unit. There is no need to enter all three sides, because they are equal by definition.

The formula explained

The perimeter formula is $$P = 3a$$, where \(a\) is the length of one side. A general triangle perimeter is the sum of its three sides (\(a + b + c\)). For an equilateral triangle \(a = b = c\), so the sum collapses to \(a + a + a = 3a\). This makes the calculation fast and exact.

Equilateral triangle with three equal sides each labeled a
An equilateral triangle has three equal sides, each of length \(a\).

Worked example

Suppose an equilateral triangle has a side length of 7 cm. Multiply the side by 3: $$P = 3 \times 7 = 21 \text{ cm}.$$ So the perimeter is 21 cm. For a side of 12.5 m, $$P = 3 \times 12.5 = 37.5 \text{ m}.$$

Three equal triangle sides laid end to end forming perimeter P equals three a
The perimeter \(P\) is the sum of all three equal sides: \(P = a + a + a = 3a\).

FAQ

Do I need to measure all three sides? No. In an equilateral triangle all sides are equal, so one measurement is enough.

What units does the result use? The perimeter is reported in the same unit as the side length you enter. The calculator does not convert units.

Can I use decimal side lengths? Yes. Decimal and fractional values are fully supported — for example a side of 4.25 gives a perimeter of 12.75.
