What This Calculator Does
The Roof Area Calculator estimates the true sloped surface area of a roof from your building's flat footprint and its pitch. Because a pitched roof slopes upward, its actual surface is always larger than the ground area it covers. Knowing this surface area lets you order the right amount of shingles, underlayment and other roofing materials, usually measured in "squares" (100 sq ft each).
How to Use It
Enter the length and width of your building footprint (the outer dimensions of the area the roof covers), in feet. Then enter the roof pitch as rise over run — for example a common pitch is 6 in 12, meaning the roof rises 6 inches for every 12 inches of horizontal run. The calculator returns the total roof surface area, the number of roofing squares, and the pitch expressed as a percentage and an angle.
The Formula Explained
First the footprint area is found by multiplying length by width. The pitch creates a slope factor equal to the square root of one plus the square of (rise ÷ run). Multiplying the footprint area by this slope factor gives the actual sloped surface area:
$$\text{Roof Area} = \left( \text{Length} \times \text{Width} \right) \times \sqrt{1 + \left( \frac{\text{rise}}{\text{run}} \right)^{2}}$$
The slope factor for a flat roof is \(1.0\); it grows as the pitch steepens. A steeper roof therefore needs more material for the same footprint.
Worked Example
Suppose a building is 40 ft by 30 ft with a 6/12 pitch. Footprint area = \(40 \times 30 = 1{,}200\) sq ft. Slope factor = \(\sqrt{1 + \left( \frac{6}{12} \right)^{2}} = \sqrt{1.25} \approx 1.1180\). Roof area = \(1{,}200 \times 1.1180 \approx 1{,}341.6\) sq ft, or about \(13.4\) roofing squares.
FAQ
Is this the same as the footprint area? No. The footprint is the flat ground area, while the roof area accounts for the slope and is always equal to or larger.
Does this include overhangs or gables? The estimate covers the area defined by the dimensions you enter. Add eave overhangs to your length and width if you want them included, and add waste allowance (typically 10–15%) when ordering.
What is a roofing square? A roofing square is 100 square feet of roof surface — the standard unit roofers use to quote and order materials.
