What This Calculator Does
A roof's footprint (the flat area it covers on the ground) is always smaller than its true surface area, because a pitched roof slopes upward. This calculator finds the slope multiplier factor for any roof pitch and applies it to your footprint to give the real roof surface area you need for ordering shingles, underlayment, and other materials.
How to Use It
Enter the footprint area in square feet (the plan-view area covered by the roof). Then enter the pitch as a rise over run — for example a 6/12 pitch means 6 inches of vertical rise for every 12 inches of horizontal run. The calculator outputs the multiplier factor and the corresponding sloped area.
The Formula Explained
The slope factor comes from the Pythagorean theorem. For each unit of horizontal run, the rafter travels \(\sqrt{\text{run}^2 + \text{rise}^2}\). Dividing by run gives the per-unit multiplier:
$$\sqrt{1 + \left(\dfrac{\text{rise}}{\text{run}}\right)^{2}}$$Multiplying your footprint by this factor accounts for the extra material the slope demands.
Worked Example
For a 6/12 pitch on a 1,500 sq ft footprint: ratio = \(6/12 = 0.5\), factor = \(\sqrt{1 + 0.25} = \sqrt{1.25} \approx 1.1180\). Sloped area:

Does this include overhangs? No — enter the footprint that already includes any overhangs or eaves you want covered.
What is the factor for a flat roof? A 0/12 pitch gives a factor of exactly 1.0, so the sloped area equals the footprint.
Should I add waste? Yes. After getting the true area, add 10–15% for waste, cuts, hips, and valleys when ordering material.
