What this calculator does

The Soccer Calories Burned Calculator estimates how many kilocalories you use while playing soccer (also called football). It uses the internationally recognised METs (metabolic equivalent of task) method, applying a representative MET value for soccer to your body weight and the length of time you played. The METs values referenced here come from the revised Physical Activity METs Table published by Japan's National Institute of Health and Nutrition, but the underlying formula is a universal standard used in sports science worldwide.

Different soccer intensities correspond to different MET values, affecting calorie burn.

How to use it

Enter your body weight in kilograms, the number of minutes you played, and choose the intensity. Casual or recreational play uses a MET of 7.0, while a competitive match uses about 10.0. Press calculate to see the estimated calories burned.

The formula explained

The calculation is: $$\text{calories} = \text{MET} \times \text{body weight (kg)} \times \text{duration (hours)} \times 1.05$$. The MET value reflects how intense the activity is relative to rest. Body weight is used directly in kilograms. Duration must be converted from minutes to hours by dividing by 60. The 1.05 factor converts MET-kg-hours into kilocalories in the standard Japanese METs method.

The METs formula combines activity intensity (MET), body weight, and time to estimate calories burned.

Worked example

A 60 kg player plays a full 90-minute casual match at 7.0 MET. Duration in hours = \(90 / 60 = 1.5\). Calories: $$7.0 \times 60 \times 1.5 \times 1.05 = 661.5 \text{ kcal}$$ A 70 kg player running for 60 minutes at 7.0 MET burns $$7.0 \times 70 \times 1.0 \times 1.05 = 514.5 \text{ kcal}$$

FAQ

Which MET should I pick? Use 7.0 for casual or training play and 10.0 for intense competitive games.

Is this exact? No. It is a gross estimate that includes your resting metabolism (MET of 1 is baseline). Actual burn varies with fitness, position and effort.

Does weight matter? Yes. Heavier players burn more calories for the same activity because moving more mass requires more energy.
